Surf the web for free at the train station: The SBB are equipping the largest Swiss train stations with an accessible, user-friendly WLAN service.

More than just free WLAN

With SBB WiFi the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) are complying with an important customer need: equipping Swiss train stations with free WLAN. The station specific homepage of SBB WiFi furthermore provides useful shortcuts to information on rail traffic and the train station, to services offered by SBB as well as current news. The project was realised in collaboration between Netcetera and Nothing Interactive. Thanks to our pragmatic approach, SBB WiFi could be realised as a performant and convincing solution with a comparatively small budget.

Secure and performant

The new WLAN service of SBB convinces as a secure and performant solution. SBB WiFi relies on static pages using NodeJS as a generator. Additional content from external partners, such as the news provided by the Blick group, are loaded in via JavaScript. Thanks to this slim approach, we could realise the website without any database needed. With our command-line tool, the sys admins of the server can gradually roll out new, station specific homepages.

Attractive WLAN service in the whole of Switzerland

The free internet service of SBB convinces with an attractive homepage which offers direct access to useful services of the SBB. Thanks to a cooperation of the SBB with the Blick group, current news of Blick and L’Hebdo are integrated into the homepage. Only a short, one-time registration via text message is required to use SBB WiFi—and you’re good to surf the web or check your e-mails any time you’re waiting for the train.
